Katherine was born on December 25, 1917, in Nacogdoches, Texas, the daughter of Charlotte and Russell. She had two sons and four daughters with Henry Finley. She died as a young mother on June 12, 1939, in Henderson, Texas, at the age of 21.

Growing up in the very small towns of south Texas, there was a man to me everyone respected, he was Pop Finley to them and Papa to me. He made the best Bar-B- Qued meat you have ever tasted. It did not even make a differance what kind of meat it was, it tasted good. He was sweet and kind, smart, as well as stern. He though things out before he said a hurtful word to anyone. Being the oldest I got a chance to do a little more with him, like talk for hours and go on little exsecrions with him. Papa took me to North Park Shopping Mall for the first time in 1970, He said looking around, you have a right to be here too. He helped me get my first apartment, and that made the transition less scarry, to be out on my own.
